Amazon Echo vs. Echo Studio

What is the Echo Studio? How does it compare to the new Echo?

Amazon regularly releases new versions of its Echo devices, and the company also continues to develop entirely new Echo products. Two new Echo speakers — the Echo 3 and the Echo Studio — are now available for pre-order. The Echo 3 is the newest iteration of the original Echo speaker. The Echo Studio is designed to provide an immersive music experience.

If you’re wondering exactly what the Echo Studio is, or what makes it different from the regular Echo, this guide is for you. We compare the Echo third-generation vs. the Echo Studio side by side.

Size

The third-generation Echo is cylindrically shaped like its predecessors. It sits at 5.8 inches tall and it has a diameter of 3.9 inches. The Echo Studio also has a cylindrical shape, but it is much larger than the Echo 3 at 8.2 inches tall and 6.8 inches in diameter.

Aesthetic

Both devices have a similar fabric design, but they have a vastly different overall aesthetic appeal.

The Echo 3 comes in four colors: Charcoal, heather grey, sandstone, and a new twilight blue color. It has the LED ring around the circumference of the top, and it has a volume up button, volume down button, an action button, and a microphone off button on top of the device.

The Echo Studio comes in charcoal grey, and it has a small cutout portion on the bottom part of the device to help it deliver better sound. The LED status ring is not around the circumference, but rather it sits around an inner ring. The four buttons (volume up, volume down, action, and mic off), sit right in a row outside of the status ring.

Sound

Sound quality is perhaps one of the most noticeable differences between the Echo Studio and most other Echo devices. While the Echo 3 has improved sound quality, it doesn’t come close to the sound specifications on the Echo Studio.

The Echo 3 has the same sound specifications as the Echo Plus 2 — a 0.8-inch woofer, a 3-inch tweeter, and Dolby processing. There’s also a port for a 3.5mm jack so you can connect an external speaker.

The Echo Studio has five speakers: A 1-inch tweeter, three separate 2-inch mid-range speakers, and a 5.25-inch woofer. The Studio also includes Dolby Atmos processing for multi-dimensional surround sound. The Echo Studio can play music in the 3D audio format, so customers with a subscription to Amazon Music 3D can listen to music in HD audio. The Studio is designed to optimize sound based on the room, so it will analyze the space and produce the best sound experience no matter where you place the device. The Echo Studio has a port for a 3.5mm jack like the Echo, but it also has a port for an optical audio cable (mini-TOSLINK).

Features

amazon echo vs studio third gen

Both the Echo 3 and the Echo Studio are powered by Alexa. You can ask the virtual assistant questions, voice-control your smart home devices, set routines, listen to music, get the news, play games, and so much more.

The major difference between the Echo third-gen and the Echo Studio is that the Echo Studio has a built-in Zigbee hub. This means you can control compatible devices without the need for a separate hub. And, while many smart home devices technically don’t require a hub to operate, and you can use the Alexa app to set routines, having a hub takes a load off your network while also making your devices work better in harmony.

Price

The new third-generation Echo retails for $100, while the Echo Studio retails for $200. Both devices are available for pre-order now. The Echo 3 releases on October 16, 2019, and the Echo Studio comes out shortly thereafter on November 7, 2019.
